Hermes Birkin HAC Bags

Before the first Hermès Birkin bag, there was the Haut à Courroies (HAC), whose name translates to “high belt.” The HAC bag was the first Hermès bag and served as the precursor to the beloved Birkin. It features the iconic closure system with a segmented flap with cutouts that frame the rolled handles, wrapping over the top and secured by the leather sangles and central touret clasp. The instantly recognizable closure underscores the shared heritage, illustrating why the Haut à Courroies is commonly known as the Birkin HAC.
The Birkin HAC was originally designed to hold and transport riding boots. This intended function required an unusually tall bag. It is significantly taller than the Birkin, offering more spacious storage. Where the Birkin 40 measures 12.75" high, the HAC Birkin 40 is 15” tall. Introduced in 1892 for equestrians, today, the generously proportioned bag is prized for travel and business.
