The Ultimate Guide to the Colors of Hermès

Whether you are an all-around Birkin fan, collect a variety of Hermès bags, or just really love the scarves and accessories, you’re sure to agree that Hermès demonstrates an extraordinary way with color.

The Hermès color chart ranges from rich, saturated hues to delicate pastels, classic neutrals, and electric shades. Each color has its own name, typically in French, and a two-digit alphanumeric color code. Some colors have passionate devotees. Every Hermès bag color is meticulously rendered in the perfect premium leather to bring out the best qualities in each. Let’s explore the entire kaleidoscope of Hermès leather colors.

Hermès artisans painstakingly mix their dyes to meet the exacting standards of the legendary design house. While this ensures the pigments remain consistent throughout the decades, the unique qualities of texture and grain inherent in each type of leather can affect how the leather takes up and displays the dye. This results in some Hermès colors looking quite different from one leather to another. They are only available in leathers that do them justice, even if that means being limited to just one.

Hermès Classic Colors

When Hermès began offering designer handbags in 1922, the number of colors was quite limited. Early on, the available Hermès colors were Noir (89), Rouge H (46), Etoupe (18), Gold (06), and Orange H (93). If you are seeking a vintage Hermès bag from the 1980s or earlier, you’ll find these pieces are available in a mere fraction of the Hermès color rainbow.

In addition to the original Hermès bag colors, a few shades released later have joined the “classic colors” distinction. These include Blanc (01), Etain (8F), Rouge Casaque (Q5), Craie (10), and Blue Nuit (2Z).

It’s important to note that colors come and go and sometimes return in the Hermès world. Hermès colors are sometimes “rested,” only to return at a later date. Currently, Orange H and Blanc are difficult to locate.

Rare and Unique Hermès Colors

When Hermès leather colors are rested, they become more scarce and are highly sought after. For instance, in 2010/11, the color Rose (5P) was released. Frequently referred to as  “Bubblegum pink” or “5P Pink,” this extraordinarily popular color was unavailable until it was offered in matte crocodile skin in 2020/2021.

But some Hermès bag colors have thus far been released a single time, making them truly rare. A collection of metallic Gold, Silver, and Bronze was introduced once in Chèvre and has not been repeated. It is impossible to say whether these metallics have been retired or rested.

Craie (10)

Craie is the French word for chalk. This color doesn't just sound better in French; it also looks impossibly chic. Without a trace of yellow, the warm undertones of Craie color bags include smoke and blush.

Fusain (8G)

Although named "charcoal," Fusain is a deep, dark gray underlaid with bark brown.

Graphite (88)

This gorgeous, deep gray has a wonderful blue undertone.

Gris Agate (82)

Soft gray with a purple undertone.

Gris Fume (4Y)

Perfectly named, Gris Fume is a lovely smokey gray. Paired with palladium hardware, it is stunning.

Gris Meyer (0L)

Gris Meyer is a rich, velvety gray that is a lighter, softer shade than the Etain. The rose gold Hermès hardware simply glows against the gorgeous Gris Meyer leather.

Gris Mouette (4Z)

The lovely soft gray of seagulls, with a delicate blue undertone.

Gris de Paris (8M)

Inspired by the ancient stonework of Paris, Gris de Paris is a gorgeous medium to dark gray reserved for alligator and crocodile skins.

Gris Perle (80)

Gris Perle is a delicate shade of pearl gray. This Hermès color is right next door to Craie.

Gris Souris (8S)

The soft shade of a field mouse, this medium gray is tinged with tan.

Gris Tourterelle (81)

A fascinating chameleon color, this pale "dove gray" reads soft, buttery tan in some lights.

Mousse (19)

A rich dove gray with rosy undertones.

Noir (89)

Noir is the blackest of black and utterly chic. Adding a Noir Birkin or any black Hermès bag elevates any ensemble.

Plomb (8P)

This handsome dark "lead" gray color appears to have bark-brown undertones in some lights.
