The Evelyne’s practicality is the reason the bag exists. Evelyne Bertrand, then head of the Hermès riding department, designed it in 1978 as a grooming carryall. The perforated “H” allowed air to circulate around equestrian equipment and originally faced inward against the wearer’s body. 

The saddlebag shape and strap also reflect its riding origins. Around 2009, Hermès moved the Evelyne into leather goods, and the “H” became the outward-facing signature recognized today. Classic versions are hand-cut, sewn, and polished, with the leather's natural reverse visible inside rather than a separate lining.
