JPG I, JPG II, and the 2024 Shoulder Birkin Light differ in proportions, hardware, pockets, materials, and interior details, so each bag must be evaluated against the standards of its era rather than against a single set of characteristics.

The Shoulder Birkin is collectible because it represents a clear departure from the traditional Birkin without losing its defining design language. Gaultier kept the familiar flap-and-closure system but stretched the body horizontally and lengthened the handles so the bag could sit comfortably under the arm. Finding a Shoulder Birkin through Hermès can be difficult, particularly when searching for an earlier JPG I or JPG II. Those bags are no longer available through boutiques, and current Shoulder Birkin Light inventory varies.

The original JPG Shoulder Birkin arrived in 2004 with an exaggerated horizontal shape, extended handles, accordion-pleated gussets, and HAC-inspired square hardware. JPG II followed with several refinements, including rounder Birkin-style hardware, added interior pockets, and a slimmer, slightly longer body. Vintage examples are most commonly associated with the 42 size.

Hermès revisited the concept in 2024 with the Shoulder Birkin Light. The new generation appeared in 29 and 39 sizes, including combinations such as Bleu Indigo denim with Black Swift leather and palladium hardware. Later variations expanded into additional leather and toile combinations. The 29 measures about 11.5" x 6.25" x 5.2", while the 39 measures about 15.4" x 8.25" x 6.5". Their wide, low proportions create the East-West profile and help the bag sit close to the body.
