The first Hermès scarf was introduced in 1937 and based off a woodblock print created by Robert Dumas, the husband of Jacqueline Hermès, Initially, the designs of the Hermès scarf incorporated the equestrian details that were the brand's foundation. But soon, the intricate designs branched out to include florals, animals, geometrics, and a wide range of lush illustrations.

The Hermès scarf was an instant success with the public. Soon, Hermès silk scarves were joined by the Hermès cashmere scarf and offered in various shapes and sizes. Square, silk Hermès scarf sizes include the Hermès 70cm scarf, the Hermès 90cm scarf and the 140cm Hermès shawl. The Hermès Twilly is a long and narrow silk scarf, often worn as a stylish neckerchief or wrapped around the leather handles of an Hermès handbag, imparting protection to the handles and a fun way to dress up the bag at the same time.

Each Hermès scarf is a wearable work of art that takes artisans upwards of 18 months to create. Hermès silk scarves have historically been silk screened and incorporate an average of 27 colors, with a hand-engraved plate needed for each color. Recently, some designs have been done digitally, enabling more diversity of patterns. New scarf designs are few in number in each collection and it is an honor to an artist to have a design selected. In addition to new designs, Hermès reissues older designs and occasionally does commemorative designs in celebration of an event, such as a new store opening.
